Aine's Birthday Fundraiser For many, Facebook has become a great way to remember friends’ and family birthdays, giving us the opportunity to wish them well on their special day. As well as the social media platform is a big deal for birthdays, it’s now become a big deal for charities raising money. Facebook’s latest development has made it easier to dedicate your birthday to a charitable cause. One in Four has enrolled in its new fundraising programme and 5 people have already donated their birthdays to us. We caught up with one of them: Aine and asked her about her birthday Fundraiser, what motivated her to donate it to One in Four, and what she did on her special day! “ I decided to give up my Birthday for One In Four as it deals with something close to my heart. I always felt from speaking amongst my peers that they viewed sexual abuse as something that occurred only in the past. I was always thinking of ways that I could benefit the charity and fundraise. I saw some of my Facebook friends doing birthday fundraisers for various charities. I knew then I was going to create a fundraiser for One In Four. Instead of my friends 'treating me to a pint' on a night out for my birthday, or treating me to lunch I'd prefer for them to put that money towards a charity that supports victims and survivors of sexual abuse. I set up the fundraiser and invited all of my Facebook friends to donate. I received donations from €5 to €200 and each and every one of them was much appreciated. My friends and family loved the idea of donating to the charity instead of purchasing gifts for me. Facebook allows you to donate as little as €5. It received a huge response, raising €745. , and yeah I had a lovely day I celebrated my birthday with my Nana and Granddad. “ So if you have a Facebook account two weeks before your birthday you will get a notification on your Facebook to ask you to start a fundraiser for your birthday. If you decide to try it there are a few simple steps to take to set this up: You can select “One in Four Ireland “ from the drop-down of charities The amount of money you want to raise. The date you want your fundraiser to end. A title and description of your fundraiser. Facebook will do the rest sending a notification to all your friends that instead of presents this year you would like them to donate to One in Four. There is also the option at any time of the year to use Facebook to ask friends and family to donate towards a challenge or event you decide to do.
