Kathleen is a keen gardener, a great baker, a granny, and now the mother of a grown-up daughter who has told her that she was sexually abused as a child by a family member. She has joined the Family Programme at One in Four.
In the waiting room, she pours herself a cup of tea and takes a seat. She sits sipping her tea thinking about presents to be bought and cards to be sent …… but this year everything seems so much more complicated. In truth, Christmas had been shattered, into tiny pieces………
When a survivor gains the courage to disclose the abuse they have suffered to a family member, their world turns upside down. The impact of sexual violence goes beyond the person who has experienced the abuse.
One in Four’s Family Programme is here for people like Kathleen.
She sits in a circle with other mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. Kathleen knows no one, but feels at home - there’s no blame, no one is judging. She feels understood.
Each week Kathleen is welcomed to the group. Hearing others telling their stories to make her experiences more real, and helps her understand how much the disclosure had truly impacted her life.
Through the therapy she received at One in Four she felt she could move on, care for herself and be there for her daughter, step by step, day by day brighter stronger.
Kathleen’s kids are grown up now. The abuse her daughter suffered happened a long time ago. But over the last few months, Kathleen has regained control of her life, she understands how her child became a victim - and really important how she can protect her grandchildren.
And now you have this moment to reach out, to someone like Kathleen, to another family, to give them space and support they need to live fully again.
P.S. 2018 has been very challenging for One in Four.
